Maintenance and upkeep of filters

2025-11-22

The vulnerable parts of diesel generator sets include air filters, oil filters, and fuel filters. To extend the service life of diesel generator sets, it is necessary to strengthen the maintenance of air filters, oil filters, and fuel filters during use, and fully utilize their functions. When installing the air filter, it is not allowed to miss, reverse or incorrectly install the sealing gaskets and rubber connecting pipes, and ensure the tightness of each fitting. The paper dust collection cup air filter used should be cleaned of dust once every 50-100 hours of operation. The surface dust can be brushed off with a soft bristled brush. If it has been in operation for more than 500 hours or is damaged, it should be replaced in a timely manner.

Using an oil bath air filter, clean the filter element with clean diesel every 100-200 hours of operation and replace the engine oil. If the filter element is broken, it should be replaced immediately, and attention should be paid to adding engine oil according to regulations during use

Various fuel filters in the fuel supply system should be cleaned of debris once every 100-200 hours of operation, and the fuel tank and all fuel pipelines should be thoroughly cleaned. When cleaning the filter element and seals, special attention should be paid. If any damage is found, it should be replaced in a timely manner. When changing oil during seasonal transitions, all components of the entire fuel supply system should be cleaned. The diesel used should meet the seasonal requirements and undergo 48 hours of precipitation purification treatment.

If the oil filter is not maintained in a timely manner during the use of the diesel generator set, the filter element will become clogged, the oil pressure will increase, the safety valve will open, and the lubricating oil will directly flow into the main oil passage, which will aggravate the wear of the lubricating surface and affect the service life of the diesel generator set. Therefore, the oil filter should be cleaned once every 180-200 hours of operation. If any damage is found, it should be replaced immediately to prevent impurities from entering the lubricating surface. When using a diesel generator set during seasonal changes, the crankcase and lubrication surfaces should also be cleaned. The method is to mix engine oil, kerosene, and diesel to make a washing oil. After the engine oil is released, the washing oil can be added for cleaning. Then, the diesel generator should run at low speed for 3-5 minutes, drain the washing oil, and add new engine oil

Precautions

1. Using low-priced filter paper to make filter cartridges, due to their large pore size, poor uniformity, and low filtration efficiency, cannot effectively filter out harmful impurities to the engine, resulting in early engine wear.

2. Use low-quality adhesive with minimal usage, which is neither oil resistant nor firmly bonded, causing a short circuit at the bonding point of the filter element; The seams of the filter element are connected by staples, which cannot be sealed and cause a short circuit, allowing a large amount of harmful impurities to enter the engine and reduce its lifespan.

3. Replace oil resistant rubber parts with ordinary rubber parts. During use, or due to the failure of internal seals, a short circuit may occur inside the filter, resulting in early wear and reduced lifespan of the engine. Alternatively, external seals may expand and deform, causing the outer seal ring of the oil filter to squeeze out, resulting in a large amount of oil leakage in a short period of time, causing the engine to burn tiles, hold the shaft, and suffer serious damage.

4. Spot welding is used instead of seam welding at the welding point of the air filter housing components, which cannot guarantee sealing and forms a short circuit.

5. The material of the center tube of the oil filter is thin instead of thick, and its strength is insufficient. During use, the center tube may shrink and the filter element may be damaged, blocking the oil circuit, resulting in insufficient engine lubrication; The reliability of the bite is poor, and during use, the bite opens, causing a large amount of oil to leak in a short period of time, resulting in tile burning and shaft holding.

6. Metal components such as filter end caps, center tubes, and casings are not treated with rust prevention, resulting in metal corrosion and impurities, turning the filter into a source of pollution. Moreover, using cement instead of adhesive is more harmful.

Therefore, the cost of inferior filters is significant, and it is recommended that users be cautious when replacing filters. It is best to choose original accessories to avoid unnecessary economic losses.
